Escalation Alert: North Darfur Buildup Risks Regional Spillover
Military sources and field witnesses reported on Sunday that there are intense military movements and rising tensions between the Joint Forces of the armed movements and the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) and their allied groups in several areas north of Darfur state, along the desert strip linking Sudan with both Libya and Chad.
These developments come in the context of the ongoing escalation in El Fasher, which for weeks has witnessed fierce clashes between rival parties.
According to consistent reports from local sources cited by Darfur24, military build-ups have been underway for about a month in the towns of Kornoi, Tina, and Um Baru, as well as parts of Wadi Hawar and the Dabba area in Northern State. These areas are considered of strategic importance due to their proximity to international borders, making them potential staging points for any upcoming military operations.
A military source within the Joint Forces explained that reinforcements which arrived in Tina, located on the border with Chad, are primarily defensive measures intended to protect the town after intelligence reports indicated the possibility of RSF attacks. The same source stressed that these movements are not currently linked to offensive plans against areas such as North Geneina, but are precautionary steps in anticipation of sudden battlefield developments.

Observers believe that the accumulation of forces in the north of Darfur may be tied to wider regional calculations, especially given the expansion of RSF operations in western Sudan and along border routes used for the movement of supplies and fighters. The areas in question — lying close to both Libya and Chad — are seen as vulnerable corridors that could be exploited for military or logistical purposes.
Meanwhile, the city of El Fasher continues to witness violent confrontations, with reports of heavy casualties and significant damage to infrastructure. The fighting there has intensified pressure on both civilians and humanitarian organizations, with many fearing that the conflict may spread further into rural areas of North Darfur.
The latest developments point to a dangerous widening of the conflict in Darfur, as both the RSF and the Joint Forces of armed movements seek to consolidate their positions near the international borders with Libya and Chad. The military gatherings in Kornoi, Tina, Um Baru, Wadi Hawar, and Dabba underscore the likelihood of a broader confrontation, with potential regional spillovers in the weeks ahead.
